Biographical/historical: Felia Doubrovska, born Felizata Dluzhnevska in 1896 in St. Petersburg, Russia, was trained in the School of the Imperial Russian Ballet. She danced with the Maryinsky Ballet until 1920 when she, with other refugees, escaped into Finland. Through her by then husband, Pierre Vladimiroff, she was introduced to Serge Diaghilev and debuted with his company in 1921. In the Ballets Russes, she danced for choreographers Bronislava Nijinska and George Balanchine. When Diaghilev died, she joined Anna Pavlova's company until Pavlova's death in1931. In 1934, Vladimiroff accepted a teaching post in Balanchine's new School of the American Ballet, which Doubrovska joined in 1947. She taught generations of dancers in the New York City Ballet. She died in New York City, at age 85, in 1981.
