Notes
Creation/production credits: Edited and for the most part illustrated by Matthaeus Merian the elder, Matthaeus Merian the younger, and Caspar Merian, with some plates by Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolph and Konrad Meyer, Joachim von Sandrart, Christian and William Richter and others.
Publications: The first edition in German, published from 1642 to 1661, consisted of 29 volumes, a general index to which was issued in 1672. All the volumes were reprinted, many of them several times, and two additional volumes, on Rome and Italy, appeared in 1681 and 1688 and are included in the second edition of the index , published in 1726.
Content: The New York Public Library has two sets, one largely made up of first editions (without the volumes relating to France, but including the "Itinerarium Italiae novantiquae" of 1640), the other made up of second or later printings (except the volumes on France, which are first edition) and including the volumes on Rome (the text of which is translated from Boissard) and Italy. For check list of both sets, cf. the annotated copy of: Schuchhard, C. Die Zeiller-Merianschen Topographieen. Bibliographisch beschreiben. [Leipzig, 1896], in *KB (1649, Zeiller).
