Description
Interview with George Balanchine conducted by John Gruen on January 17, 1981. The location is not identified. Streaming file (approximately 13 minutes). George Balanchine speaks with John Gruen about his ballet Apollo including how [Serge] Diaghilev found the designer [André Bauchant] of the original set and costumes; the substitution of the costumes with new costumes designed by Coco Chanel; Balanchine's unhappiness with the libretto including his comment that "you cannot dance a story;" money as a reason for Boris Kochno's and Stravinsky's creating the libretto; Balanchine's later revisions to Apollo including his comment: "I took out the garbage."
