Notes
Content: Written on mount: "Photo: G. Wharton James, Pasadena, CA, 1898."
Content: Nick Tumaca (also Dumaka), whose non-traditional views and non-conformist ways led his fellow villagers in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, to accuse him of sorcery and place him on trial for witchcraft. U.S. government authorities intervened and a tense standoff ensued between the Zunis and troops of the Arizona military department. A peaceful resolution was reached and after a short exile Tumaca returned to Zuni and later became a prominent member of the community.
