Description
Hosted by B. Walters and reported by B. Brown, the segment explores the art of conducting and the knowledge, personality, and passion needed to succeed in this profession. Short performance clips show conductors Z. Mehta and A. Previn. L. Bernstein, Sir Georg Solti, and D. Zinman comment "on the power of baton". S. Magad, co-concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, comments on Solti's abilities. In clips of Solti rehearsing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he briefly discusses the interpretation of the famous first four notes of the piece. The final portion of the segment focuses on M. Morgan, Solti's young assistant conductor and protégé. Morgan shares his thoughts on conducting, and is shown with Solti in study sessions, preparing to conduct Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in C Minor for his debut appearance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
