Interview with Alexander Grant conducted by John Gruen on November 17, 1977 in Toronto, Canada, as part of the research for John Gruen's book, Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (Viking Press, New York, 1979). Streaming audio file (approximately 44 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Alexander Grant, artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada speaks with John Gruen about the repertoire of the company's current season, in particular Erik Bruhn's productions of Coppélia and La sylphide; his first meeting Bruhn while on tour with dancers (mainly) from the Royal Ballet; Bruhn's reputation as an excellent teacher; Grant's directorship of the National Ballet of Canada including the process of deciding whether to accept the position; Bruhn's reasons for not having accepted the directorship himself; Celia Franca's reasons for resigning; character roles including Bruhn as a character dancer; Leonide Massine and how he helped Grant in his career; the transition from student to company member.
