Description
Music and dance excerpts recorded in performance at the Ho'olaule'a O Hana (Hana Music Festival) in Hana, Maui, on August 16, 1970, interspersed with footage of scenery, people, agricultural work, fishing, and a rodeo. 'Iolani Luahine, famed exponent of the hula kahiko (ancient hula) performs and dances informally at the festival, in one dance accompanying herself by chanting and playing the kāla'au (sticks). Other dancers, both male and female, perform examples of the hula kahiko and hula 'auana (modern hula), often accompanying themselves on traditional Hawaiian instruments such as the 'ili'ili (lava stones), pūili (split bamboo rattles), and ipu (gourds).
