Description
Probably a plate from an unidentified book. A nineteenth-century recreation of a ritual in ancient Rome, set in an open-air courtyard. At center is a statue of the huntress goddess Diana, holding her bow above her head. An altar before her pedestal holds a burning offering, which frames her in its smoke without obscuring her. Three women dance, their postures evocative of early nineteenth-century ballet. They are accompanied by a group of female musicians at left, playing the tambourine, a curved horn, the aulos or double flute, and the sistrum, a percussion instrument. Two bearded men stand behind them, both in laurel wreaths. One is heavily robed, with the aspect of a priest. The second man, wearing a tunic that bares one shoulder, holds a double ax; a dead stag lies at his feet. At right are more women, bearing laurel wreaths. A pole supports a target and a dead bird, both with arrows through their hearts, and a laurel wreath.
