Description
Interview with Martin Levy and Sanae Kawaguchi conducted by James Lyon as host. Recorded on April 6, 1957 and broadcast by radio station WNYC, New York, on its series, Today in ballet. Streaming audio file (approximately 27 minutes). [Announcements and introduction of guests by James Lyons.] Martin Levy speaks about the music for his opera Sotoba Komachi; James Lyons speaks about Levy's background and career; Lyons introduces Sanae Kawaguchi, the opera's choreographer; Kawaguchi speaks about the choreography of Sotoba Komachi; Lyons speaks about Kawaguchi's background and achievements; Lyons, Levy, and Kawaguchi speak about Noh including its history, and the plot, cast, dancers, staging, and orchestration of Sotoba Komachi; the use of masks in Noh; the fact that Sotoba Komachi is inspired by Noh but is not a Noh drama. [At approximately 19:59 minutes, excerpts from a working tape of Sotoba Komachi are played followed by Lyons' closing remarks and announcements].
