Biographical/historical: Le cheval de bronze, set in China, was an opéra-féerie with a libretto by Eugène Scribe, music by Daniel Auber, and choreography by Lucien Petipa. It was first presented at the Théâtre de l'Opéra Comique, Paris, in 1835.
Biographical/historical: Illustration from a periodical, possibly Le Charivari, published in Paris. Jules Joseph Guillaume Bourdet was a French painter, lithographer, and illustrator. His depictions of Parisian theatre productions appeared in journals such as Le Charivari and Le monde dramatique.

Depiction of a woman clad in a westerner's version of Chinese attire, sitting sidesaddle on a horse, apparently suspended among clouds. The image is framed by theatre curtains and a proscenium decorated with Chinese cloud motifs.
