Description
Interview with Stuart Hodes conducted by John Gruen, as host, for broadcast on August 30, 1976 by radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance. Streaming audio file (approximately one hour). [Begins abruptly with end of introductory remarks by Oscar Buhler.] John Gruen, as host, introduces Stuart Hodes; Stuart Hodes and John Gruen speak about dance at colleges and universities including how standards have changed; the dance department at the School of the Arts [now the Tisch School of the Arts] at New York University; Hodes' responsibilities as chairperson of the department; the students and the required academic curriculum [a recording of Suites for string orchestra by Arthur Foote used in Hodes' ballet A shape of light is played]; Hodes speaks about his ballet A shape of light; Martha Graham and his time in the Martha Graham Dance Company including some of his roles; working with Graham; the diverse critical response to her work; Graham as a person; teachers at the School of the Arts; Gruen's closing remarks [closing remarks by Oscar Buhler; commercial announcement].
