Biographical/historical: Emma Murray was an actress in London theatres in the late 1830s and early 1840s. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds three prints of her: one, dated 1838, affiliates her with the Royal Olympic Theatre. Two others, dated 1839, depict her in the role of Susanna in the play The two Figaros.
Biographical/historical: Despite its title, Charles Selby's burletta Antony and Cleopatra (first performed at the Adelphi Theatre, London, on Nov. 7, 1842) had nothing to do with the historical figures nor with William Shakespeare's tragedy. In the script published by Duncombe's Acting Edition of the British Theatre, the sole characters are Antony, a gentleman about town, played by Mr. Wright, and Cleopatra, a grisette, played by Miss Murray. Their dialogue includes references to dancing, probably performed with appropriate action. The script's description of Cleopatra's costume matches the costume depicted in this print.
