DescriptionDocumentary on the 1985 U.S. tour of the Grand Kabuki, following the company from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York to Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to Royce Hall at the University of California, Los Angeles. Company members and western scholars provide information and insights into various aspects of the art of kabuki, including its history, acting techniques, costumes and make-up. Appearing in interviews are kabuki actors Bando Tamasaburo, Onoe Shoroku II and his son Onoe Tatsunosuke, and Danjuro XII; as well as Jane Hermann of the Metropolitan Opera House, Peter Grilli of the Japan Society, kabuki expert Faubion Bowers, and theater historian Leonard C. Pronko. Performance excerpts are drawn from the repertory for the tour.
