Interview with Margot Fonteyn conducted by John Gruen, as host on radio station WNCN-FM, New York on its series The sound of dance, for broadcast on June 21, 1976. The interview was conducted in Washington, D.C. The radio program is contained in the approximate first 26 minutes of the recording; the remainder of the recording is ambient noise. Streaming file (approximately 26 minutes). [Begins abruptly.] Margot Fonteyn speaks with John Gruen about performing; Gruen describes Fonteyn's appearance as she applies her make-up for her role in The merry widow; Fonteyn speaks about the impossibility of advising young people with regard to careers in dance; her thoughts on NInette de Valois; John Meehan; her thoughts on retiring. [Interview with Fonteyn ends at approximately 16:00; Gruen speaks about the production of The merry widow, which is being performed by the Australian Ballet, with Margot Fonteyn in the title role; makes a semi-commercial announcement about the upcoming season at the Jacob's Pillow dance festival, in particular the program of works by Auguste Bournonville to be performed by dancers from the Danish Royal Ballet; a recording of an excerpt of music, by Franz Lehár (arranged by John Lanchberry), from The merry widow is played followed by Gruen's closing remarks, more music and, closing remarks by Oscar Buhler]. The remaining approximate 38 minutes of the recording is ambient noise.
