Description
Kevin McKenzie talks about the abundance of strong male dancers in American Ballet Theatre (ABT); the revival of Variations for Four by Anton Dolin; acceptance of men as ballet dancers; McKenzie bringing the theater back into ABT and the elevation of technique; nurturing dancers and making a star (a complete artist) by finding the right package and working on their weaknesses and strengths; pushing individual artists and their talent; public relating to a particular star dancer; creating excitement and bringing the audience back, and the current exciting group of dancers that draw the audience in; traditional catagories for men in ballet and how men dancers are not fitting into those catagories; McKenzie's experience as a dancer helping him as artistic director of ABT; ABT has always been a deep and rich artistic institution; focusing on the institutional side of things to move forward; chemistry is crucial to making a good company; McKenzie having a dream about the Met and having a second season in New York with season focusing on new work. Ethan Stiefel discusses becoming a ballet dancer as a child because of his sister; studying at School of American Ballet (SAB) and School of Classical Ballet with Baryshnikov; taking class with Stanley Williams as a male dancer; how does it feel to dance classical ballet roles and what led him to ABT after dancing with New York City Ballet (NYCB); liking all types of dance and wanting to do modern dance; dealing with stress and injuries; dancing Variations for Four and what makes it interesting; all the incredible men dancers at ABT now from all over the world and how it is generating excitement; partnering work and not taking a subservient attitude, along with the importance of chemistry; stereotypes with being a ballet dancer in Wisconsin as a child; the importance and rewards of expressing yourself while performing; and difference between ballet and sports. Joaquin De Luz talks about becoming a ballet dancer as a child and joining Victor Ullate Ballet at the age of 15; coming to New York after winning a competition; recently becoming a soloist with ABT and what he loves about expressing himself as a dancer; performing with his brother-in-law Angel Corella; his dream role being Basil in Don Q; being a male ballet dancer in Spain and how it affected his friendships; and knowing Angel Corella since he was nine years old.
