Holcomb.Biographical/historical: This print was based on an ambrotype, an early type of photography that came into use in the 1850s, by the eminent photographer Mathew Brady, who is perhaps best known for his photographic documentation of the Civil War.Biographical/historical: The sisters Ernestine and Annie Henrarde were born in the English village of Esher, of French parentage. Their father was employed by Her Majesty's Theatre in London, and the sisters studied dancing with the theatre's ballet master, Monsieur Delamater. They performed for a time in the corps de ballet of the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, and were subsequently engaged to dance at the Bowery Theatre in New York. Ernestine is also said to have performed as an actress with the Wallack's Theatre company in the late 1850s.
