NotesFunding: National Endowment for the Arts Millennium Project.Biographical/historical: Griffes' music first appeared in print in 1909 when G. Schirmer published his German songs, which were written as a student in Berlin, Germany. For six years thereafter, despite Griffes' constant petitions, Schirmer refused to publish any more of his work, rejecting his newer music as "too shimmering" and not "deep". In November, 1914, the composer left five English song manuscripts with Mr. Schirmer himself who did accept and publish them, and six piano compostions, in 1915. In 1917, Griffes' Chinese and Japanese songs appeared in print, and, the next year, several song cycles, and three sets of piano pieces written for children under the pseudonym Arthur Tomlinson, were published. In 1920, his year of death, Griffes signed a royalty agreement with Schirmer to publish the Poem for flute and orchestra but this, along with much of his other music, was published posthumously.Content: Title devised by cataloger.Funding: Treasures of the American Performing Arts, 1875-1923
