Content: Title and date provided by cataloger based on handwritten notes on original reel hub, container and audition.
Content: Handwritten note on original reel hub [torn, partially legible]: "[To]nebur[st] ; [Trav]elog ; [Zell]erbach 10/78 ; Fraction ; [Exc]hange". Handwritten note on original case spine: "Toneburst, Fractions, Exchange". Handwritten note taped to original container: "Basic 4 ; msc 2/24/81".
Content: Contains performances of music for Merce Cunningham's Sounddance (1974), Travelogue (1977), Exchange (1978), and Fractions (1978).
Content: Transferred from original open tape reel by the New York Public Library's Audio and Moving Image Preservation (PAMI) sound engineering staff at the Library for the Performing Arts on February 12, 2014. To create the streaming files, the sound engineers edited out the recording silences in the preservation files, thus the discrepancies in length between the preservation files and the streaming files.
Venue: Recorded in performances at the Zellerbach Auditorium in, Berkeley, California 1978 October 20 and 21.
Acquisition: Gift; Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation, 2011-2012.
Physical Description
Audiotape reel
Extent: 1 audiotape reel (143 minutes) : analog, 7 1/2 ips, quarter track, mono ; 7 in.
Sound quality is overall fair. Toneburst has recording distortion, especially in the beginning and the recording quality improves as it continues. Telephones and birds is recorded at an inconsistent volume level, often low with the voices inaudible at times. Weatherings has microphone adjustment sounds in the beginning of the recording and the recording quality improves as it continues. Equal distribution is mostly good with a slight tape "hiss" throughout.
