Notes
Biographical/historical: The painter and illustrator Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans, born in 1816, began his study of art in his native Belgium. He traveled in Italy, Greece, Algeria, and Turkey, and lived in Naples from 1856-1860, where his exposure to ancient art led him to incorporate its elements into his artworks. Many of his paintings appear to be genre scenes in antique costumes and settings. In 1860 he settled in Paris, where he exhibited his paintings at the Salons. He died on Dec. 31, 1889 in Boulogne-on-Seine, France.
