Notes
Biographical/historical: According to William M.S. Rasmussen and Robert S. Tilton's catalog for the 1999 exhibition George Washington-- the man behind the myths (see citation above), this engraving was published in Benson J. Lossing's book Washington and the American republic (1857), and depicted an actual event in Washington's life. Washington, then aged sixteen and already active as a professional surveyor, was traveling along the southern branch of the Potomac River as part of a team led by George William Fairfax. They encountered a group of Native Americans returning from war, and witnessed their dance by firelight.
