Jesu anno Domini millesimo septingentesimo decimo quinto, 1715.Biographical/historical: French Jesuit rhetorician and dramatist; born Vendes (Calvados), Sept. 4, 1675; died Paris, Jan. 11, 1741; named professor of rhetoric at Louis-le-Grand in 1708 and continued to teach there until his death. Cf. Backer-Sommervogel, VI, col. 1021-1033. Voltaire studied rhetoric under Porée in 1709-1710, and remained in contact with him long afterward. "Son plus grand mérite fut de faire aimer les lettres et la vertu à ses disciples"--Voltaire, in his catalog of writers of the age of Louis XIV (in Le siècle de Louis XIV, first published 1751).
