Grube, Wien.Biographical/historical: The portrayal of the interactions between young and beautiful women and wealthy older men is scarcely new to art, but in the nineteenth century it found new expression in depicting the women as ballet dancers and the men as their so-called patrons, thus adding the glamour of the theatrical world and a veneer of artistic patronage to the interchange. These scenes might be set in the foyer de danse or green-room of a theatre, or in the ballet studio, or behind the scenes at a performance, as in this print.
