Interview with Erik Bruhn conducted by John Gruen as research for his book Erik Bruhn: danseur noble (1979), in New York, N,Y., on September 22, 1977. This is Part 13 of an 18-part series. However, there is no audio for parts 2 and 10, which are available only as edited transcripts. Streaming file 1 (approximately 46 minutes). Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about the relationship of his art to his life including his balancing of work and play; the intensity he has always brought to his dancing and to his personal relationships; spending time away from dance in order to renew himself; Kenneth MacMillan's Las hermanas; roles he now feels ready to dance, including the psychological roles in Martha Graham's works; his admiration for José Limón's works; Paul Taylor; John Neumeier and the pas de deux [Epilogue] he created for Bruhn and Natalia Makarova; Frederick Ashton's Romeo and Juliet including Bruhn's regret that it was not created for him; performing in Antony Tudor's works; his relationship with George Balanchine and his time at New York City Ballet; the Panamerica evening [a program of ballets by Balanchine and others]; [ends abruptly but continues on streaming file 2]. Erik Bruhn speaks with John Gruen about Apollo including his learning the role of Apollo directly from George Balanchine; Panamerica including the fact that this was the sole occasion on which Balanchine created a role for him; other roles he danced at New York City Ballet; possible reasons as to why major choreographers created so few roles for him; John Cranko and Daphnis and Chloe including Bruhn's quitting after the opening night performance; his relationship with Rudolf Nureyev including how the publicity surrounding Nureyev affected Bruhn; Bruhn's response to Gruen's question as to whether Nureyev had loved Bruhn blindly; his description of their relationship as two comets' having collided; his relationship with other Russian dancers who defected [ends abruptly].
